At VALENCIA GO, we’re committed to ensuring that e-bike use in Valencia is not just good for the planet, but also safe. That’s why, starting May 1st, 2025, all e-bikes receiving a subsidy from VALENCIA GO must have UL-certified batteries. This requirement is designed to protect you, your family, and our community from the risks associated with uncertified batteries. Let’s dive into why these batteries matter and how you can be an informed consumer when shopping for your e-bike.

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is an independent safety certification organization that sets rigorous standards for products, including e-bike batteries. A UL-certified battery means it has been tested for safety, reducing the risk of fire hazards, overheating, and other dangerous malfunctions.
Unfortunately, as more people adopt e-bikes, there has also been a rise in battery fires caused by non-certified, low-quality lithium-ion batteries. That’s why we’re making safety a top priority for residents.
To ensure your e-bike is subsidy-eligible and, more importantly, safe, here’s what to look for:
- The UL Holographic Label: A genuine UL-certified battery will have a holographic UL Solutions mark on the battery itself or its charger. If it’s missing, the product may not be truly certified. See below for an example.

- UL Number Verification: You can check a product’s certification status directly on UL’s database (https://productiq.ulprospector.com). Just enter the manufacturer’s name or the UL file number.
- Purchase from Trusted Brands: Most reputable brands, such as Aventon, Lectric, Rad Power Bikes, and Specialized, sell UL-certified e-bikes. If you’re buying from a lesser-known retailer, do extra research. We recommend reviewing our E-Bikes Buyers Guide before purchasing to learn more information!
Unfortunately, some Amazon sellers mislead consumers by falsely claiming UL certification or using deceptive labeling practices. To protect yourself and make informed purchasing decisions, here are a few essential tips to keep in mind:
- If a listing says UL-certified, check it again. Many sellers use misleading language or display fake certification labels.
- If a retailer won’t provide proof of certification, it’s a red flag. Don’t be afraid to ask for documentation before purchasing.
- Price too good to be true? Some ultra-cheap e-bikes cut corners on battery safety, making them a potential fire hazard.

When you take advantage of VALENCIA GO’s e-bike subsidy, make sure your e-bike’s battery is UL-certified. Without this certification, your purchase won’t qualify for the subsidy, and more importantly, you could be putting yourself at risk.
